The English Club

Searle's depictions of the traditional English 'drawing room' environment or gentlemen's club are bravura examples of his technique.

As a precocious 8yr old, I believe it was in the pages of Punch annuals or bound collections at my local Library that I first encountered Searle and such drawings of fusty gentlemen's clubs.

I didn't encounter his Molesworth or Thurber until I was at least 10.
